In Mexico, February 2nd is all about tamales as we celebrate 'Día de la Candelaria'. ⁠

This celebration is linked to dia de Reyes, and those who found a baby Jesus figurine in their piece of Rosca de Reyes are by tradition obligated to provide tamales on February 2nd, to all who shared the same rosca. ⁠

While this feast day is fully rooted in Christianity, the Candelaria festivities in Mexico come from our ancestors' traditions mixed with the religious beliefs that the Spanish brought to the “new world”.⁠

Catholics celebrate the Virgin of Candelaria and it is believed that baby Jesus was presented to the church on Feb 2.⁠
⁠
The importance of tamales on Candelaria along with the beverage atole—both of which are made from corn—comes from the essential role of maize to Indigenous Pre-Hispanic populations. ⁠
⁠
In fact, even the date February 2 coincided with celebrations in the Aztec calendar to ask the gods for rain and a bountiful harvest! 🌽 🤯 ⁠

Mexico wouldn't be the same without the countless street vendors that feed the city. And tacos de canasta (basket tacos) are one of the most popular street foods you can find throughout Mexico. You can spot the taqueros rolling the city's streets on their bicycles, stopping from time to time at popular spots so you can indulge in their delicious tacos.

Tacos the canasta are steamy and soft, filled with potatoes, beans, chorizo or chicharron. They are always accompanied by salsa roja or salsa verde... we are literally drooling as we write this down! 🤤
